I want the stereotype gone.. I want people to stop expecting my son to be like them and try to get on his level. Fortunately most of my family already does this. I would like to see more of the world do it too.

I am so sick of hearing people in denial who claim that Autism is a "blessing" or a "gift." It is NOT. It is a severe handicap and needs to be approached as such, with compassion, reason, and NOT DENIAL. As someone who grew up (under) an older sibling with severe autism, and lots of destructive head-banging for decades, I am sick and tired of this b.s. about the "GIFT" of autism. GROW UP and stop denying reality.

I love my grandson. I don't always "get" where he is coming from, but he is truly amazing. Our conversations on the yahoo IM are really wonderful. And the "level" of the topics we discuss along with the detail involved would be equal more to a 16 year old child than a 9 year old child.

Honey, there are so many situations in life that just "scream" for understanding and compassion. People tend to focus only on those things they visit their lives.

As to Heather, I was so happy the day she was born. She provides the "reality" in Mikey's world. Mikey truly loves her and most of what I have observed is that he is trying to be the big brother and watch out for her. Because he truly cares for her and others in his family he speaks up. Being on the A. Spectrum and trying to help your family when something seems wrong does not make him the "lone ranger". We all try to help our families. It is touching to me to see how much he cares for others.

You are doing a wonderful job honey. Mother's everywhere tend to do the "bulk" of the child rearing. I am not sure why that is but it can be exhausting.

I love you dearly and would love to read this book that has made such an impact on you.

Its a good thing I didn't just head down there after half an hour. We didn't get called back for another hour and a half. Meanwhile, my little sister asked to go to a friends house. I told her she could go, but I wasn't sure she was allowed to sleep over.

Congrats on moving back to O-town and all the benefits involved!! My prayers for a safe & easy transition. Does Mikey's new school have some sort of summer camp, maybe he could spend a little bit of time there over spring break or summer vacation to at least get used to the physical changes? Wow! Good for Mikey. I am confused though, since when was reading "ever" a problem for Mikey?

And though finger painting and all the other things are not necessary in the over all scheme of things, and sensory issues are a problem for him, Still, there's another school of thought that would indicate the more exposure he gets to those things, the less of a problem over time it may become.

I seem to remember when you were little, you lagged behind your peers in some of those areas because you had no interest in them either. That year in Montessori school really worked with you on those things and it does make a difference.

Art, etc, works the mind/wiring in such a way it can expand his creative abilities and thought processes. He may be writing his own video games someday and thinking outside the normal parameter would help him to be a bit more flexible.

I know there are no "correct" answers but only trial and error when it comes to our children and learning.

I too, agree a school centered around his issues would certainly seem a plus for him. Maybe some where closer to where you are moving they may have one, or one with a bus.

It's too bad they don't let him do computer/photo art that he likes to do. I thought they were going to be flexible with him?
